Justin Schwartz in front of the university seal

CU Boulder is a force for innovation, equity and discovery—and Chancellor Justin Schwartz is working to amplify that impact across Colorado and beyond.

Since joining the university from The Pennsylvania State University in 2024, Schwartz has led efforts to improve student retention and graduation, strengthen pathways for access and affordability, and reaffirm CU Boulder’s leadership in sustainability, academic freedom,  and interdisciplinary problem-solving. His vision reflects the belief that higher education must serve the public good—and that CU Boulder must lead in shaping a more just and resilient future.

Prior to CU Boulder, Schwartz served as provost at Penn State and dean of its College of Engineering. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and other scientific organizations. He holds seven patents and serves on the Council on Competitiveness Executive Committee.

Schwartz is a visible, values-driven leader committed to building a community where knowledge, service and access go hand in hand.
