I grew up in the the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain range in Eastern Kentucky. I moved to Boulder in 2010 to pursue a PhD in linguistics. I am a first-generation college student, as well as a first-generation graduate student in my family. My research focuses on how people's perceptions of one another may be influenced by a person's accent or style of speaking, particularly how people who don't speak "standard English" are often viewed negatively by others.
