Fractions for Primary Education with PhET Simulations Course

PhET Interactive Simulations at the University of Colorado Boulder provides free, research-based math and science simulations for all education levels. All simulations and resources are open source and extensively tested for effectiveness.

In this course, you will learn strategies for using PhET simulations to teach fractions in grades 3–5. You will explore simulations such as Fractions: Intro, Fraction Matcher, Build a Fraction, Fractions: Mixed Numbers, and Fractions: Equality, while reflecting on teaching approaches like small groups, demonstrations, storytelling, predictions, and encouraging student discussion.

To complete the course, you must participate in discussions, complete auto-graded quizzes, and submit one major peer-reviewed assignment: designing a lesson using a PhET fraction simulation and reviewing peers’ lessons using a provided rubric.

In this course, you will learn how to:

  • Develop familiarity with fractions through PhET sims
  • Reflect on strategies for teaching fractions
  • Design a sim-based lesson about fractions
