The Research & Innovation Office (RIO) is the central point for support and advocacy for CU Boulder's world-class scholarship, creative work and research. It serves as a focal point for investment in all of our knowledge building activities. We strive to provide the infrastructure and administrative support necessary to promote and sustain our highly productive faculty and research programs.

In 2016-17, 2,348 proposals worth $2B were processed by the Office of Contracts & Grants, and 2,019 award actions led to $508M in research funding. Through the Office of Research Integrity, we seek to ensure that research activities are conducted in compliance with Federal and state regulations and meet the highest ethical standards.

RIO also provides HR services for 1600 research faculty and 460 research staff members in 11 research institutes and departments.

The research enterprise includes more than ninety research institutes, centers and laboratories making discoveries in areas such as renewable energy; media, religion and culture; space science; cardiac physiology; natural hazards and emergency preparedness; prevention of violence; and language and learning. Undergraduate students have opportunities to participate in academic enrichment, scholarly or creative activity, by partnering with one of CU’s outstanding faculty through its Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). Graduate students are provided opportunities to engage in research through assistantships.
