The head editor administers all aspects of the Honors Journal’s production. The head editor monitors and facilitates solicitations of submissions, selection of work, formatting, production, distribution, and financing. The head editor organizes and runs the journal editorial board meetings and oversees the activities of all other editors. It is the job of the head editor to set the goals for the Honors Journal for the year and create a time line within which those goals can be accomplished. The head editor informs and works with the faculty advisor for the Honors Journal in consultation with the Honors Program Director. The head editor is selected from the previous year's journal board.
The managing editor is in charge of organizing and managing all submissions recieved by the journal. The managing editor has responsibility for the Honors Journal email account and will read incoming emails and respond or forward them to the appropriate person. Reliability and organizational skills are a must. The associate managing editor assists the managing editor with all of these tasks.
The publicity director organizes and designs campaigns to solicit submissions, manages publicity for the Honors Journal and works with other members of the board to distribute the Honors Journal. The publicity director is in charge of organizing the yearly release event in the spring. Experience with social media platforms and an understanding of publicity and branding are a plus; an ethusiasm to speak to people about the journal is a must. The publicity director position on the board is sometimes combined with the finance manager or graphic designer positions.
The graphic designer is in charge of all graphic work related to the journal. This includes designing flyers/posters and design of the print and pdf versions of the journal each year. The graphic designer will work with the head editor, publicity director, and editorial board to translate the desired tone and messages of the journal into visual communication that is consistent with past journals and the branding of the Honors Journal. This is a very creative position. Extensive knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign is a must (or knowledge of some and dedication to learn other software). The graphic designer position on the board is sometimes combined with the publicity director.
The diversity and inclusion director oversees the journal's goals and efforts in maintaining a diverse and inclusive editorial board. The director also leads the board in achieving the journal's goal of amplifying undergraduate student voices at CU (especially in the Arts & Sciences).
The finance manager will work with the head editor to create a budget for the Honors Journal, track spending for the year, apply for funding and brainstorm and pursue new sources of funding for the journal. The finance manager will also work with the publicity manager to plan the budget and expenses for the year.
The fiction editor helps to solicit outstanding undergraduate fiction, selects fiction for inclusion in the Honors Journal, assists the head editor where necessary, and works with other members of the Honors Journal board to design and distribute the Honors Journal.
The poetry editor helps to solicit outstanding undergraduate poetry, selects poetry for inclusion in the Honors Journal, assists the head editor where necessary, and works with other members of the Honors Journal board to design and distribute the Honors Journal.
The creative nonfiction editor helps to solicit outstanding undergraduate creative non-fiction, selects creative non-fiction for inclusion in the Honors Journal, assists the head editor where necessary, and works with other members of the Honors Journal board to design and distribute the Honors Journal.
The social sciences editor helps to solicit outstanding undergraduate essays in the social sciences (including Anthropology, Economics, Environmental Studies, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, and others), selects social science essays for inclusion in the Honors Journal, assists the head editor where necessary, and works with the other members of the Honors Journal editorial board to design and distribute the Honors Journal.
The natural sciences editor helps to solicit outstanding undergraduate essays in the natural sciences (including Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Integrative Physiology, Psychology & Neuroscience, Physics, and others), selects natural science essays for inclusion in the Honors Journal, assists the head editor where necessary, and works with the other members of the Honors Journal editorial board to design and distribute the Honors Journal.
The gender and ethnic studies editor helps to solicit outstanding undergraduate essays in women and gender studies and ethnic studies, select gender studies and ethnic studies essays for inclusion in the Honors Journal, assist the head editor where necessary, and work with the other members of the Honors Journal editorial board to design and distribute the Honors Journal.
The humanities editor helps to solicit outstanding undergraduate essays in the humanities (including Art History, English, History, Languages, Philosophy, Religion and others), selects humanities essays for inclusion in the Honors Journal, assists the head editor where necessary, and works with the other members of the Honors Journal editorial board to design and to distribute the Honors Journal.
The art editor helps to solicit outstanding undergraduate art work for inclusion in the Honors Journal, selects art for inclusion in the Honors Journal, assists the head editor with layout and design and other duties where needed, works with other members of the Honors Journal Board to distribute the Honors Journal. Please attach 1-2 pieces of your original art to your application with a statement about each piece.
The open media editor helps to solicit outstanding undergraduate digital media work, selects media work for inclusion in the Honors Journal, assists the head editor where necessary, and works with other members of the Honors Journal board to design and distribute the Honors Journal. The opem media category includes all work that is not in the traditional studio arts. This includes music, dance, film, digital art, set design, advertising, as well as art produced through other digital means.
The associate editors assist the members of the board as necessary with all tasks related to the journal. This position provides an opportunity for those who would like to be editors but may not have as much experience to learn about the operations of the Honors Journal and get involved so they can move on to positions with more responsibility in the future. Most associate editors go on to become board members for several years. An Associate Managing Editor is particularly important to retain institutional knowledge about journal organizational systems on the board from year to year.
