Coursework in the Music Education program is designed to provide a coherent learning experience that culminates in a successful student teaching semester. This program is completed in conjunction with the College of Music.
Students applying to this program should have or be completing, a bachelor’s degree in Music (either BM or BA) from an accredited institution of higher education, before applying. Students should contact the Music Education Chair for more information if he or she does not have a bachelors degree in music. Licensure applications that are received, will be reviewed by the School of Education and then forwarded to the College of Music for review. If a candiate meets the the College of Music's requirements, he or she will be notified to set up an interview and audition with the Music Education Chair. The Music Education Chair will submit a recommendation to the School of Education on the candidates behalf if they recommend the candidate for the Music Education Licensure program.
Music Education candidates must have a minimum 3.0 Music GPA.

Admission to the Music Education teacher education program is competitive and satisfying the minimum criteria does not guarantee acceptance. Please also note that some requirements will take longer than others to complete. All applicants should plan accordingly. To be considered for admission, applicants must meet the following:

All application materials must be submitted by 5 p.m. on the deadline in order to be considered.
Two education courses, EDUC 3013 and either EDUC 4112, 4411 or 4050, are required for the program but may be taken prior to admission. Both courses provide students with an introduction to the education program and are a good representation of what students can expect throughout the program. In addition to the School of Education requirements, Music Education candidates must satisfy Music Content Requirements to prepare them in the necessary content knowledge.
Content Requirements do not need to be completed in order to apply to the program. However, all requirements must be satisfied prior to the student teaching semester.
In the final semester, candidates student teach for a minimum of 17 weeks. This involves a full-time (all day) commitment. To student teach, candidates must complete all course requirements and pass a state-approved content area licensure exam prior to the Student Teaching semester.
