Sophia Valdez

Sophia Magdalena Valdez is a Ph.D student in the Medieval and Early Modern Spanish Literatures track. She holds a double BA in Spanish and English and a MA in Spanish, both from Portland State University.  Her research focuses on representations of transgressive women in a transatlantic context, particularly regarding the archetype of the mujer varonil and the intersections of religion, gender, and power. She is also interested in how folklore, Indigenous cosmologies, and classical antiquity have influenced Latin American literary canons and pop culture. 

Sophia enjoys teaching and strives to make the study of Hispanic history and literature accessible for all levels of Spanish speakers.
