Sophia Magdalena Valdez is a Ph.D student in the Medieval and Early Modern Spanish Literatures track. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish & English and a Master of Arts in Spanish, both from Portland State University. Her research interests include representations of religion and gender in Golden Age Spain, religious syncretism between Catholic and Indigenous beliefs, colonial Latin American art, and the Spanish gothic novel. Sophia has taught a variety of levels and age groups in Spanish, and her class topics have ranged from "Learning Spanish Through Games" to "Spanish for Educators and Medical Professionals." Sophia is also passionate about making the study of Spanish and Latin American history engaging, fun, and accessible for all levels of Spanish learners.
