PORT 1010 (5) Beginning Portuguese 1

Basic vocabulary and fundamentals of grammar through practice in speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing, based on the Communicative Approach. This course also introduces the culture of the Portuguese-speaking world.

PORT 1020 (5) Beginning Portuguese 2

Basic vocabulary and fundamentals of grammar through practice in speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing, based on the Communicative Approach. Introduction to the culture of the Portuguese-speaking world. Continuation of PORT 1010.

  • Prereq. PORT 1010 (minimum grade C-) or placement test.

PORT 2110 (3) Second Year Portuguese I

This course involves practice in speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing at Intermediate level. Besides introducing new grammar topics corresponding to the Intermediate level, it also includes a grammar review (PORT1010 and PORT1020) with extra work on vocabulary acquisition. The course is divided in four articulated modules and explores relevant topics of the Brazilian culture through different media. Classes will all be conducted in Portuguese. Please note that no textbook is adopted for this course, which is all based on Internet activities, most of which are available on Practice Portuguese blog.

  • Approved for GT-AH4. Meets MAPS requirement for foreign language.
  • Prereq. PORT 1020 (minimum grade C-) or placement test.

PORT 2120 (3) Second Year Portuguese 2

This course involves practice in speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing at Intermediate level, based on the Communicative Approach. It includes grammar and extra work on vocabulary acquisition, both explored through literary texts written by renowned authors of the Portuguese-speaking world. Please note that no textbook is adopted for this course. The course packet will be available on D2L.

  • Prereq. PORT2110 (minimum grade C-) or PORT2350 (minimum grade C-) or placement test.

PORT 2350 (3) Portuguese for Spanish Speakers

This is an intensive introduction to the Portuguese language for Spanish-speakers. The course comprehends basic vocabulary and fundamentals of grammar through practice in speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing, based on the Communicative Approach. The use of different media to explore cultural aspects of the Portuguese-speaking world will be integral part of the classes. Please note that, although this course contemplates Portuguese as a world language, the main focus will be on Brazilian Portuguese.

  • Prereqs. 5-semesters of college Spanish or equivalent or Span 3000 or placement or department approval.

PORT 3003 (3) Advanced Portuguese Language Skills

Builds vocabulary and competence in more sophisticated written Portuguese. Involves composition, reading, grammar and class discussion. Themes are drawn primarily from current issues in Brazil.

  • Mandatory for the Portuguese-track majors.
  • Prereq. PORT 2120 or PORT 2150 or PORT 2350 (minimum grade C-).

PORT 3220 (3) Latin American Culture: Spanish America and Brazil

Examines literary, artistic, and philosophical currents in Spanish America and Portuguese America (Brazil), from pre-Columbian times to the present. Taught in Spanish.

  • Recommended prereqs., PORT 2110 and 2120.
  • Required prereq. SPAN 3000 (minimum grade C-).
  • Credit not granted for this course and SPAN 3210. Same as SPAN 3220.

PORT 3230 (3) Lusophone Cultures: Brazil, Portugal and Lusophone Africa

Examines literary, artistic and intellectual currents in Brazil, Portugal and Lusophone Africa from the 15th century period of Portuguese expansion to the post-colonial present.

  • Taught in Portuguese.
  • Required prereqs. PORT 2110 and PORT 2120 and PORT 2350 (minimum grade C- in each course).

PORT 3270 (6) Development, Government, and Entrepreneurship in Brazil

Immerses students in the language, culture, and contemporary realties of Brazil. Explores how development is conceived and practiced, how natural resource governance is debated and enacted, and how entrepreneurial approaches shape development and governance challenges in Brazil. Focuses on research projects about sustainable development, environmental governance, and social entrepreneurship. Through these topics students also refine cultural intelligence and improve Portuguese academic writing.

  • This is a faculty sponsored Global Studies course offered through the Study Abroad program.
  • Recommended prereq. PORT 3003.
  • Required prereqs. PORT 2120 or PORT 2350 (minimum grade B-).

PORT 4110 (3) Survey of Brazilian Literature

Examines major works of Brazilian literature. Same as PORT 5110.

  • Prereqs. PORT 2120 and PORT 2350 and PORT 3230 (minimum grade C- in each course).

PORT 4150 (3) Survey of Portuguese Literature

Examines major works of Portuguese literature. Same as PORT 5150.

  • Prereqs. PORT 2120 and PORT 2350 and PORT 3230 (minimum grade C- in each course).

PORT 4230 (3) Special Topics in Luso-Brazilian and/or African Literature

Designed to examine intensively particular topics or issues concerning the literatures of Portugal, Brazil, and/or the African countries of Portuguese colonization. Taught in Spanish.

  • May be repeated up to 6 total credit hours.
  • Recommended prereqs. SPAN 3120 and an additional course above SPAN 3000. Same as SPAN 4230.
  • Required prereqs. PORT 3230 and SPAN 3100 (minimum grade C- in each course).

PORT 4840 (1-3) Independent Study

  • May be repeated up to 7 total credit hours.

PORT 5110 (3) Survey of Brazilian Literature
