Principal Investigator, Biocatalysis & C1 Conversion

Michael Guarnieri, Ph.D., is a Senior Scientist and Principal Investigator at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. His research employs molecular systems biology approaches—integrating synthetic biology and functional genomics with molecular microbiology and biochemical techniques—to elucidate microbial metabolic regulatory mechanisms and engineer microbial biocatalysts for novel biofuel and intermediate biosynthetic capacity. Dr. Guarnieri earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where his research focused on structural and biophysical characterization of bacterial two-component systems. Prior to his graduate studies, Dr. Guarnieri conducted undergraduate research at Brown University, examining viral secretion and virus-host interactions.
