PREP Graduate Research Assistant Position at NIST in the Quantum Nanophotonics Group (PREP0005275)
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado Boulder. PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.
Research Location:
At NIST in the Quantum Nanophotonics Group
Summary of the Position:
This work aims to develop advanced single-photon detectors for quantum networking applications. To this end, we are developing high-efficiency single-photon detectors that can operate at count rates above 10 million events/s. The detectors are also capable of supporting limited photon-number resolution. The project involves fabrication of these detectors, developing metrology tools to characterize the efficiency and the photon-number resolving performance, and the design and modelling of next-generation detector devices. The project scope is limited to fundamental research, and results will be available in the public domain through journal articles and conference presentations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fabricate single-photon superconducting nanowire detectors.
- Model the behavior of detector devices.
- Perform efficiency calibrations and detector tomography.
- Develop appropriate electronics and read out circuitry.
- Present results at internal meetings, and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.
- Ensuring that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been archived or otherwise transmitted to the larger organization.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Applicants must be enrolled full-time at the University of Colorado Boulder master’s degree or doctoral degree program in physics, mathematics, engineering, or closely related program.
- Must currently possess a 3.0 GPA or higher.
- Must be a degree seeking student through CU Boulder.
Qualifications:
- Be enrolled in a PhD program in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent program.
- Three (3) or more years of relevant experience at the graduate level.
- Experience with fabricating single-photon detectors.
- Experience with building and characterizing detector properties.
- Experience working with devices in a cryogenic environment (< 10K).
- Experience with electronic PCB layout.
- Experience with modeling tools such as Lumerical.
- Familiarity with Python, Matlab, or similar programming language.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including a strong record of peer-reviewed publications.
Currently Funded:
- Spring 2027 - March 31, 2028 (end of grant)
Salary (contract pay format):
- Pre-comps: $3,258 per month
- Post-comps: $3,430 per month
Benefits:
- Graduate Research Assistant contract pay based on pre-comps/post-comps rate.
- Tuition, fees, and insurance paid for by PREP during the academic year while in PREP.
