PREP Graduate Research Assistant Position at NIST in the Quantum Nanophotonics Group (PREP0005274)

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

The Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) is a special partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado Boulder. PREP provides research opportunities to CU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in NIST labs to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.

Research Location:

At NIST in the Quantum Nanophotonics Group

Summary of the Position:

This work aims to develop advanced entangled photon pair sources for device-independent quantum applications. To this end, we are developing a rack-mounted high-e iciency entangled photon source using bulk optical components. We are also developing sending and receiving stations to enable experiments related to device-independent quantum position verification. This entails Minkowski spacetime modelling of experimental layouts, data analysis, and the development of low-latency ranging devices. The project scope is limited to fundamental research, and results will be available in the public domain through journal articles and conference presentations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, align, and build polarization entangled photon sources.
  • Model quantum position verification layouts and experiments.
  • Build measurement stations using fast electronics and Pockels cells.
  • Present results at internal meetings, and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.
  • Ensuring that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been archived or otherwise transmitted to the larger organization.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time at the University of Colorado Boulder master’s degree or doctoral degree program in physics, mathematics, engineering, or closely related program.
  • Must currently possess a 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • Must be a degree seeking student through CU Boulder.

Qualifications:

  • Be enrolled in a PhD program in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent program.
  • Three (3) or more years of relevant experience at the graduate level.
  • Experience with high-efficiency fiber coupling.
  • Experience with building and aligning spontaneous parametric downconversion sources.
  • Experience working with devices in a cryogenic environment (< 10K).
  • Experience aligning Pockels cells.
  • Experience performing divide-independent quantum position verification experiments.
  • Familiarity with Python, Matlab, or similar programming language.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including a strong record of peer-reviewed publications.

Currently Funded:

  • Spring 2027 - March 31, 2028 (end of grant)

Salary (contract pay format):

  • Pre-comps: $3,258 per month
  • Post-comps: $3,430 per month

Benefits:

  • Graduate Research Assistant contract pay based on pre-comps/post-comps rate.
  • Tuition, fees, and insurance paid for by PREP during the academic year while in PREP

If interested, please send your resume/CV to Lisa Valencia at recruitprep@colorado.edu. The finalist will be required to submit their resume/CV and transcript.

This position requires the successful completion of an NAIS agreement and federal security clearance as mandated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Employment is contingent upon approval of these requirements as determined by NIST.
