Property and Evidence

The CU Boulder Police Department Property and Evidence section is responsible for the intake, storage, and final disposition of all physical property and evidence collected in CUPD cases. The section provides essential support to CUPD officers by offering packaging and submission guidance, as well as assisting command staff with reporting and information related to property in the department’s custody.

In 2021, the Property and Evidence Section became the first of any university police department in the nation to earn accreditation through the SCS Northwest Evidence Management Professional Accreditation program, a nationally recognized accreditor for evidence management standards. This independent accreditation was successfully renewed in 2024.

Each year, the CUPD Property and Evidence Section maintains custody of approximately 3,000 to 3,500 items. In 2025, an average of about 120 new items were submitted every month. One of the section’s primary functions is to balance the number of items submitted with the number of items returned to their owners or disposed of in a timely manner, and in accordance with department policy.
