Could a diesel export ban backfire?

As diesel prices remain near record highs, the Trump administration is weighing restrictions on U.S. diesel exports as a way to lower prices at home. A CU Boulder finance expert says restrictions could also have consequences for gasoline prices and U.S. refineries.

Edward Van Wesep, professor and chair of the Finance Division at CU Boulder’s Leeds School of Business, is available to discuss:

  • How an outright diesel export ban could push domestic diesel prices sharply lower while increasing costs for gasoline production.
  • How diesel, gasoline and jet fuel production are connected—and why refineries cannot simply stop producing one fuel without affecting the others.
