Period(ic) Study
Study Goals

The primary purpose of the study is to (1) measure chemicals in menstrual blood and in specific components of menstrual blood, such as mucus, and to (2) compare these concentrations to those found in peripheral blood. The secondary purpose of the study is to assess the acceptability of the logistics of the sample collection process.
Study Impact
Menstrual blood is a rarely studied biological fluid that could provide important information about the health of the female reproductive system. This study aims to explore and describe any correlations between increased chemical exposure and reproductive and systemic pathologies by comparing both menstrual and venous blood samples from our participants.
Opportunities for Engagement
We are launching a pilot study during the Fall 2025 Semester to recruit 20 participants who are willing to provide menstrual blood samples and venous blood samples. There will be opportunities for students to assist with recruitment of participant, collection of samples and data, and data analysis, beginning in November of 2025.
