Benjamin Young
- Postdoctoral Researcher
Dr. Young obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Miami where his work was
focused on the disease response of the critically endangered stony coral
Acropora palmata and it's microbiome. This work ignited his passion in
genetics and genomics, with a specific love for the coding and bioinformatic
aspects. Following his Ph.D., he was a postdoctoral scholar at the National
Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, continuing his work in coral
disease research, as well as providing bioinformatic aid and guidance for a
wide range of organisms including insects, fish, and prokaryotes.
He moved to Boulder in October 2023 and worked in the Quandt lab (EBIO)
as a bioinformatic postdoctoral researcher, using his skill sets to assemble
fungal genomes, undertake population genetics, phylogenomics, and RNA-seq.
Dr. Young will be using his extensive bioinformatic and coding experience to
compliment the wide array of research already occurring in the Boulder Bee
Lab, including analyses such as genome assembly and
phylogenomics.
Outside of research, Dr. Young is an avid backcountry skier, wildlife
photographer, rock climber, trail runner, and musician.
