Love Data Week is an international celebration of data that aims to promote good data practices, while building and engaging a community around topics related to research data management, sharing, preservation, and reuse. This year’s theme, "My Kind of Data,” centers the personal side of data and its transformative potential.

We will be hosting button-making stations, a virtual keynote on trans linguistics, and a data visualization contest, as well as  an informal meetup and lightning talks to share what students and researchers are doing with data across campus. Throughout the week, follow #LoveData24 on your socials for more events and opportunities.

Virtual Keynote!

Our virtual keynote speaker was Teddy Manning (CUNY Graduate School). Hän reviewed the results thus far of hänen project, MapLemon, a digital humanities and linguistics project exploring transgender accents among North American English speakers via a corpus that addresses the inclusion of transgender and nonbinary identities in data collection. Button Up Your Data Love!

Do you like data and buttons? We’ll have a buttonmaker setup throughout the week at the various campus libraries for you to stop by and make your own buttons with data themes. See the Love Data Week schedule on the left for times and places.

Lightning Talks and Meetup!

Lightning Talks, 1-2pm: Let's delve into the realms of data equity and inclusion, disciplinary communities, and the power of data in creating a more just world! We invite you to present 4-minute rapid-fire presentations around this theme, in order to highlight your data and to offer diverse perspectives on the impact of data in our lives, especially the importance of inclusivity, collaboration, and ethical practices. Meetup, 2-3pm: After the lightning talks session, meet and talk with presenters and the data-curious. CONTEST! Do You See What I See?

Buffalo statue in shadow at sunset We're kicking off Love Data Week early with our Buffalization Data Visualization challenge! We’re inviting you to show off your data visualization and storytelling skills. Create a data visualization of our CU Buffs football team dataset using your preferred software or tools. You can even hand make or draw a visualization!

  • Here's the dataset you should use: CU Buffs Football 2024 - Data

  • Deadline: February 14th

  • Projects can submitted as an image or a link. Please submit your project using this form. If handmaking your visualization, take a photo for the submission form and bring the original with you when we announce winners.

  • A panel of judges (including the Director of Basketball Analytics for the Boston Celtics!) will select a winner.

  • Visualizations will be judged on creativity, clarity, data accuracy, visual appeal, and storytelling.

  • Winners announced and prizes given: Friday, February 16th at 2pm during our Meet-up in Norlin, E206. We will have small prizes for best graduate and best undergraduate project and will feature the winning projects on this page.

      • A. Yes! Take a look at the dataset and you may surprise yourself with your outsider's view.
    • Q. Can a team create and enter one visualization?
      • A. Yes. If you do so, please ensure you include all team members' information with your submission. 
    • Q. What unit are the numbers in?
      • A. Distances are measured in yards. If there's a unit you're not sure about, ask us.
    • Q. Is there any specific data within the dataset I have to use?
      • A. No, you can use whatever section of the data you want as long as it includes data for CU Buffs.
    • ​​Q. Some of your data is wrong!
    • Q. Can I include outside data in my visualization?
      • ​​​​​​​​A. Please use only data from the dataset. Thanks!
    • Q. Can I use AI to generate my visualization?
      • A. Yes, but please be clear in your submission that you did and explain the prompts you used to guide the generation of your visualization.
    • Q. Do I need to be affiliated with CU-Boulder to enter the contest?
      • A. No, but prizes will only be awarded to those who are local or who can attend the Friday, February 16 Meet-Up with award announcements.
