The minor in Spanish consists of 20 credits:

  • Required Spanish Courses:
    • SPAN 2120 Second-Year Spanish 2
    • SPAN 3000 Advanced Spanish Language Skills
    • Alternatively, students can replace SPAN 2150 Intensive Second-Year Spanish for SPAN 2120. In this case, only 3 out of the 5 credits from SPAN 2150 will be counted towards the minor.
    • Courses below SPAN 2120 do not count toward the minor.
    • Students who test into 3000 have to make up for 2120 by taking 15 upper division credits, instead of 12
    • SPAN 3001 does not count for the minor.
  • 12 Upper-Division Credits.
    • These credits can be selected from any course offered by the department and taught in Spanish.

When selecting courses, students should bear in mind the following:

  • SPAN 3100 Literary Analysis is not required for the minor, but it is a prerequisite for all 4000-level literature courses
  • SPAN 3030 Professional Spanish for Business 1 AND
SPAN 3040 Professional Spanish for Business 2
SPAN 4060 Problems of Business Translation in Spanish 1 AND
SPAN 4070 Problems of Business Translation in Spanish 2
Are sequenced courses. Each course is a prerequisite for the following one.
  • A maximum of 9 credits, with no more 6 upper-division credits, can be transferred from other US institutions towards the minor.
  • A maximum of 6 credits can be taken abroad; this may be in addition to transfer credits.
