Through the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates program, JILA and the Department of Physics at the University of Colorado hosted 12 REU students for the summer of 2007.

The REU program gives undergraduates the opportunity to do cutting-edge research outside the classroom. Each student will be placed in a separate research group, which typically includes a lead professor, postdocs, and graduate students. Depending on the groups, REU students will work on ongoing projects with oversight from members of the research group or be assigned a particular task. There are no formal classes; students are given the opportunity to experience a real-life research environment.

Research opportunities exist in the following areas:

  • Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics
  • Biophysics
  • Condensed Matter Physics
  • Elementary Particle Physics
  • Geophysics
  • Physics Education Research
  • Plasma Physics

Application Deadline—Passed for 2008; TBA for 2009.
