Described by colleagues as a “very sharp, talented young criminologist,” David Pyrooz is making significant contributions to the study of criminal gang culture, and is one of the few who’s looking at what happens when you get out of a gang. His research focus is earning him kudos and expanding society's understanding of gang populations.

Elizabeth Koebele, a doctoral candidate in the Environmental Studies Program, was one of only 19 award winners from 535 applications for the Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy grant. The environmentalist rubs elbows with ranchers and fly fishing companies, for example, adding a very social component to her research.

The campus will conduct a test of the CU Boulder Alerts system on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at noon to raise awareness of how the campus community will be notified in case of a campus emergency. The test will include text messages, emails, social media and website announcements. Annual testing of emergency notification systems is required by the Clery Act, a federal law.

Journalist and intellectual Thomas Frank will give a talk on Monday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in Math 100. Frank’s articles have appeared in Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Salon, The Guardian and Wall Street Journal.

In the Oct. 5 LASP public lecture, LASP scientist Frank Eparvier will give an overview of space weather, how it affects everything from GPS to satellite navigation and power grids, and the exciting capabilities for real-time space weather monitoring onboard the new series of NOAA GOES-R satellites. The first satellite in this series, with the LASP-built EXIS on-board, is slated to launch on Nov. 4.

This past month more than 150 managers, supervisors and HR liaisons have attended a 45-minute, in-person briefing where Human Resources-Organizational and Employee Development presented an overview of a new, comprehensive year-long onboarding program for new employees.

If you gaze at the night sky from Earth in just the right place, you will see the International Space Station (ISS), a bright speck of light hurtling through space at 5 miles per second as it orbits 220 miles above the planet. And if you were an astronaut floating around inside the station, you would see high-tech hardware and experiments designed and built at CU Boulder.

The Research and Innovation Office (RIO) invites faculty to a panel discussion on the David and Lucile Packard Foundation’s Fellowships for Science and Engineering. Professor Shijie Zhong, a CU recipient of a Packard Fellowship, will highlight his successful experience and answer questions from attendees.

The CU Boulder campus alcohol agent will host several "TIPS" server classes and "Alcohol Service on Campus Policy" classes throughout the school year, to ensure compliance when serving alcohol at events on campus.
