On Oct. 18, the BioFrontiers Institute will honor Julie Louise Gerberding, M.D., M.P.H., with the 2016 Charlie Butcher Award. Dr. Gerberding was the first woman to be appointed Director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). She will give a free talk “Fighting microbial terrorists: From Anthrax to Zika” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Focused on connecting scientists and communities, the CU Boulder Engaged Scientist Series will begin with the director of Thriving Earth Exchange at the American Geophysical Union, Raj Panda. This talk and the associated workshop for graduate students will begin a series of trainings to equip scientists with community engagement skills.

If you gaze at the night sky from Earth in just the right place, you will see the International Space Station (ISS), a bright speck of light hurtling through space at 5 miles per second as it orbits 220 miles above the planet. And if you were an astronaut floating around inside the station, you would see high-tech hardware and experiments designed and built at CU Boulder.

The Research and Innovation Office (RIO) invites faculty to a panel discussion on the David and Lucile Packard Foundation’s Fellowships for Science and Engineering. CU Boulder and DigitalGlobe Inc. are partnering to provide access to DigitalGlobe’s industry-leading high-resolution satellite imagery, data and analytics tools to the university’s Earth Lab initiative in order to advance earth and space science research.

During the week of Sept. 19, CU Boulder and institutions across the United States are hosting a range of events to honor their postdoctoral scholars as part of National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW). Postdoc research at CU Boulder spans the social, physical and biological sciences as well as engineering, mathematics and humanities, and has been highlighted in top-tier journals including Nature, Cell and Science. The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) and Postdoctoral Association of Colorado (PAC) would like to recognize postdocs on campus and at affiliated National Labs during this seventh annual NPAW.

Robert Pappalardo of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory will discuss the upcoming NASA mission to Jupiter's icy moon, Europa, and its potential to support simple life. The mission, slated to launch in the early 2020s, will investigate the moon’s ice shell, ocean, composition, geology, and current activity. Friday, Sept. 23, from 5 to 6 p.m. in Benson Earth Sciences, Room 180.
