Several space shuttle experiments flown by the University of Colorado at Boulder-based BioServe Space Technologies Center in October 1998 show promise for developing new biomedical products, according to recent research results.

Spring Parents Weekend, Feb. 25-27 at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will give parents the opportunity to learn about CU’s connection to space, attend a basketball game and learn about off-campus housing options. The reservation deadline for parents who want to participate is Friday, Feb. 4. Parents can view astronaut mementos during the reception in the CU Heritage Center and hear Professor Jim Palmer’s film lecture on, "The Right Stuff," about the selection of the Mercury astronauts.

CU-Boulder psychology Professor Gary McClelland had long been frustrated by a lack of illustrations to help him teach statistics classes. Textbooks provided only limited numbers of pictures because of publishing costs. Overhead projectors and blackboards also had drawbacks. But advances in technology allowed him to try something new. "When the Internet and Java came along it struck me that this was the perfect way to provide all the pictures we have been missing in our statistics courses," he said.

The University of Colorado at Boulder Chancellor’s Community Lecture Series resumes in February with four distinguished women faculty from the Boulder campus presenting topics from their fields of expertise. Completing its second year, the series brings CU faculty into the community for talks ranging from arts and humanities to business and the sciences.

Citing his strong leadership ability and dedication to the university, CU-Boulder College of Business Dean Steven Manaster has named Professor Donald Lichtenstein associate dean of academic programs. "Donnie brings strong management skills and great commitment to this position," Manaster said. "He is well respected at the College of Business and throughout the university." Lichtenstein’s appointment runs through June 30, 2002. He will oversee the daily operation of the undergraduate and graduate business programs and also will spearhead faculty issues.

Wade, will give a lecture at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, in the Lindsley Memorial Courtroom at the CU School of Law on the Boulder campus.

The University of Colorado at Boulder has received $830,000 to launch a national summer school for talented graduate students pursuing advanced studies in condensed matter and materials physics. The institute will attract about 15 of the world's top scientists to teach about 50 of the best graduate students in the United States each year, said physics Professor Leo Radzihovsky, a co-founder of the new school. The institute is patterned after a similar summer school held in Boulder since 1989 for top graduate students in high-energy physics.

Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students at the University of Colorado at Boulder will participate in the "Leadership Growing Beyond 2000: LGBT Colorado Statewide Leadership Conference," Feb. 4-6 at Colorado State University. The conference is a collaborative effort by GLBT resource centers from universities in Colorado and Wyoming to bring student leaders together. Organizers said the conference is an opportunity for students to learn and grow as activists and to create regional networks with other GLBT students and advocates.

The University of Colorado at Boulder is presenting hands-on science workshops focusing on Earth’s ozone and Antarctica for fifth- through eighth-grade teachers and students from Colorado Springs, Boulder, Denver, Pueblo and other Front Range cities. The workshops are put on by Science Explorers, a CU science enrichment program that offers teachers day-long, activity-based workshops to experience new science curriculum in action before they use it themselves.

Students, staff and faculty at the University of Colorado at Boulder are invited to attend the 12th annual Diversity Awareness Seminar, sponsored by the Multicultural Development Team. The seminar offers an experiential educational opportunity to examine diversity and multiculturalism. Sessions will be held Mondays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the University Memorial Center, room 305, on Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28 and March 6 and March 13.
