Diversity in Academy Awards

recent study unveiled the historical lack of diversity among Academy Awards nominees and winners. While numbers have improved since the #Oscarssowhite movement, significant disparities remain. Ernesto Acevedo-Muñoz, department chair and professor of cinema studies and moving image arts, can discuss the historical significance of the Oscars, the changes the Academy has made to become more diverse, and what they should continue to do in terms of inclusivity.

Rick Stevens, department chair and associate professor of media studies, examines how cultural messages are formed and passed through popular culture, including films. Stevens can discuss the following topics related to this year’s nominees:

  • The role of “economies of prestige” in cultural creation, and the significance of awards shows over box office and people’s choice measures. 
  • How nominated films like “Avatar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Elvis” overcame new studio and streaming challenges coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
