Facebook login screenFacebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will testify in front of congressional leaders later this week, acknowledging that the company could have done more to prevent the “powerful tool” that is Facebook from “being used for harm,” according to testimony provided today to a congressional committee.

CU Boulder experts are available this week to discuss issues surrounding social media and privacy.

On how your social media data is used: Casey Fiesler is an assistant professor in Information Science with a background in social computing, law and ethics. She can discuss how social media data is used for research, the ethics around such use, as well as privacy and legal issues surrounding social media.

On alternative ownership models: Nathan Schneider, an assistant professor in the College of Media, Communication and Information (CMCI), can discuss alternative ownership models that companies like Facebook might employ to address these challenges.

On children’s privacy concerns: The National Education Policy Center at CU Boulder publishes regular reports on corporate involvement in education. Alex Molnar, director of the Commercialism in Education Research Unit, and Faith Boninger, co-director of the unit, can speak to growing concerns about companies like Facebook and Google releasing products to children and tracking children’s information.
