Open to students, faculty and staff, Ethics and Compliance is launching its annual education series of discussions with campus subject matter experts to share knowledge and best practices.

Compliance with federal laws such as Title IX or ADA ensures individuals’ access to opportunities and information, helping them achieve academic and professional success.

The first session on Monday, Sept. 24, will feature the Office of Information Security and will focus on the impacts of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): what it is, how it is different and why it matters to us. Discussed will be insight into the ways GDPR is influencing privacy best practices, as well as new state laws in the United States.

The EU’s regulation has had a large impact on how the world thinks about privacy with both broad direct impacts on many organizations, as well as indirect impacts through shaping how people view privacy. This presentation will be sure to highlight the compliance impacts, as well as the ethical opportunities a new regulation such as GDPR provides our campus community.

Hosted, in most cases, on the fourth Monday of each month and designed to give attendees practical and actionable information, the sessions involve discussions of compliance basics, case studies and how campus fulfills its legal responsibilities while delivering on the imperatives of shaping tomorrow’s leaders, being the top university for innovation and positively impacting humanity.

The number of regulations and requirements that institutions must follow can seem daunting, but subject matter experts work closely with faculty and staff to develop solutions for situations—knowledge that is shared in the Ethics and Compliance monthly education series.

The sessions take place from noon to 1 p.m. in the Ice Rink Overlook Large Meeting Room at the Student Recreation Center. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to participate in networking with other attendees and are welcome to bring their lunch. Light refreshments are provided.
