The University Libraries at the University of Colorado at Boulder is changing its book fine procedure in order to minimize the number of library books that are declared "lost" by the Libraries and billed by state collections as part of a larger response to overall budget constraints.

University of Colorado at Boulder Professor Kenneth Foote has received the Association of American Geographer's 2005 Gilbert Grosvenor Honors in Geographic Education award. Foote was recognized for his efforts to improve the learning and teaching of geography in higher education through Web-based projects and for his work to help young faculty develop professionally. He also is the chair of CU-Boulder's geography department. Given annually by the AAG, the Gilbert Grosvenor award recognizes outstanding contributions in geographic education.

The University of Colorado at Boulder chapter of Engineers Without Borders and its partners, which include the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the universities of Ruhengeri and Butare in Rwanda, have been awarded the international Mondialogo Engineering Award along with about $18,000 to support their long-term sustainable engineering project in Muramba, Rwanda.

Dennis A. Ahlburg, senior associate dean of the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, has been named dean of the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado at Boulder, effective Aug. 1, pending approval by the CU Board of Regents. Ahlburg replaces Interim Dean Stephen Lawrence after a seven-month national search. Lawrence has served as interim dean of the Leeds School since July 2004, replacing former Dean Steven Manaster.

Astronomers using NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope have imaged a giant molecular cloud being shredded by howling stellar winds and searing radiation, exposing a group of towering dust pillars harboring infant stars, according to a University of Colorado at Boulder researcher.

Eight girls from two Denver high schools will design and maintain a "blog" -- a Web page that combines elements of a diary and a community bulletin board -- to discuss images of women in the media during a summer program hosted by the University of Colorado at Boulder. The DigitalCUrrents Summer Day Camp runs from May 31 to June 17 and will include students from Thomas Jefferson and Denver North high schools. The program is a partnership between CU-Boulder's Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society and the Denver Public Schools' Computer Magnet Program.

Eric Cornell, a 2001 Nobel Prize winner, adjoint professor of physics at the University of Colorado at Boulder and research physicist and fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, has been elected to the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Sixteen active or retired CU-Boulder faculty are now members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which was founded in 1780.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder has received unanimous approval for re-accreditation from the Accrediting Council on Education for Journalism and Mass Communications. A five-person accrediting team visited the Boulder campus in January and determined that the School of Journalism was in compliance with all standards. The council voted unanimously to accept the team's recommendation for re-accreditation earlier this month.

Joint CU-Boulder, UCDHSC news release Researchers at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center today received an enormous yet delicate delivery of a much anticipated $5 million nuclear magnetic resonance magnet. The delivery came nearly two years after CU researchers were awarded a $6.5 million grant to bring to Colorado the largest NMR magnet available in the world today. It will be the only magnet of its type in the Rocky Mountain region and will be used for biomedical research.
