Native species of bats have returned to Boulder for the summer. Unfortunately, our local bats have a high rate of infection with the rabies virus, which is 100 percent fatal to humans. However, an extremely effective rabies vaccine can provide immunity to rabies when administered after an exposure (postexposure prophylaxis) or for protection before an exposure occurs (preexposure prophylaxis).

A state application organized by the University of Colorado Boulder has been submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration for the development of one of six unmanned aircraft systems test sites slated to be established across the United States .

University of Colorado Boulder faculty member Ivan Smalyukh is among 61 scientists to receive a 2013 Early Career Award from the U.S. Department of Energy . Smalyukh, an assistant professor of physics and a founding fellow of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute , or RASEI, has been awarded $750,000 over five years. RASEI is a joint venture between CU-Boulder and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

The newly elected CUSG executives are now hiring executive staff members for the 2013-14 school year. "This is an amazing opportunity to get involved with CU Student Government and gain a unique set of leadership skills and policy experience," said Chris Schaefbauer, president of student affairs. "These positions work directly with the executives on making campus a better place for the student body."

As the school year wraps up, students at Summit Charter Middle School in Boulder will debrief on how their $25,000 stock portfolio performed. The middle school students invested money under supervision as part of a course created and taught by accounting and finance students from the University of Colorado Boulder’s Leeds School of Business .

What do 1992, 1987, 1982 and 1977 have in common? These years were the starting points of University of Colorado careers that have lasted between 20 and 35 years, and were recognized at the annual Staff Council “Years of Service” appreciation event. Chancellor DiStefano opened the event by expressing his deep appreciation for the staff being acknowledged and for the vital role that staff plays in the everyday operations of the university. Staff Council Vice-Chair Philip Bradley emceed the event, sharing historical tidbits about the milestone years and reading the honorees’ names.

Open Enrollment ends this Friday at 5 p.m. This is the one time of year when University of Colorado benefits-eligible employees and retirees may make changes to benefits. While the overall 2013-14 plan rates are 3.8 percent higher than current rates, the amount paid by university faculty and staff will not increase – and in some cases, it may decrease.

Last July, something unprecedented in the 34-year satellite record happened: 98 percent of the Greenland Ice Sheet’s surface melted, compared to roughly 50 percent during an average summer.
