Books and apples on deskPack those lunch boxes and get the notebooks ready because K-12 students from across Colorado will be heading back to school in the coming weeks.

CU Boulder experts are available for media interviews on a wide range of state and national educational issues, including the importance of early childhood education and how young people are getting involved in activism around gun violence, climate change and more.

Distrust in education: Katherine Schultz, dean of the School of Education at CU Boulder, is the author of Distrust and Educational Change, which probes how distrust in the country’s educational system has hampered efforts at school reform for decades. She is available to talk about recent teacher strikes across the country and other debates in K-12 education.

Early childhood education: Mimi Engel, an associate professor of education, can discuss research on early childhood education, including full-day Kindergarten, and its impacts on young learners.

Youth activism: Ben Kirshner, professor of education and director of CU Engage, explores how young people have built their political power in recent years around a range of issues. The author of Youth Activism in an Era of Education Inequality, Kirshner is available to talk about how students in Colorado and across the country are participating in education debates and youth organizing.

Free speech: Elizabeth Meyer, associate professor of education, can discuss how K-12 schools approach issues of free speech in the classroom. Her research also probes bullying and harassment, sex discrimination and LGBTQ rights in schools.

Trauma in schools: Elizabeth Dutro, professor of education, is the author of the upcoming book The Vulnerable Heart of Literacy. She is available to discuss how teachers can integrate the challenging experiences of their students, such as the loss of family members or exposure to violence, into curricula.
