The International English Center (IEC) at the University of Colorado Boulder provides a variety of academic, professional and cultural programs for teens, undergraduate and graduate-level students as well as working professionals.

For over 40 years they have welcomed international students to the campus and to Boulder, providing a safe, nurturing and dynamic environment where students develop their English language skills, explore U.S. culture and connect with other students from around the world.

Become a homestay family

The IEC is looking for anyone who may be interested in hosting an international student. Hosting is an excellent way to learn about the world and other cultures.

By opening your home to an international student, you open a student’s eyes to life in the U.S., helping to foster cross-cultural communication and understanding. The student becomes a part of your family, creating a lifelong friendship.

Currently, there are groups of students who are interested in coming to Boulder to learn English and live with an American family for a few weeks to experience U.S. culture. Most students who wish for homestay are Japanese university students, but the IEC also hosts a four-week program for high school students from various countries in January and July.

Host families are required to provide well-balanced meals, reasonable use of the house and amenities, and transportation as necessary.

Those interested in becoming a homestay family must submit an application, complete a criminal background check, provide two non-relative personal references and permit an annual in-home, in-person interview.

Learn more about the program

The IEC will be hosting two open houses for anyone interested in joining the program. An experienced host family will be on hand to talk about their experience and answer questions.

Please feel free to share this information with colleagues, friends and neighbors. Both events will take place at the International English Center, located at 1030 13th St. in Boulder.
