Thank you for your interest in applying for the BFA in Musical Theatre degree. There are multiple steps in the application process which you must complete. The following text is a resource for you to follow as you proceed through the application process. You may want to print out this page and check off the steps as you complete them. Please note that some steps do not necessarily have to be completed in this order. (Some of the forms listed below require Adobe® Reader® to download. You may download a free copy of by clicking on this link and following the directions.)

If you are a current student at CU Boulder, you may skip to STEP 3

STEP 1 – Read Admissions Information
Read information about admission to the BFA in Musical Theatre in the Department of Theatre & Dance, College of Arts & Sciences.

STEP 2 – Visit us!
Prospective students and parents are invited to visit campus and the Theatre & Dance Department (please call 303-492-7355 and make an appointment).

Current students are urged to speak to the Theatre and Dance Advisor during Open Office Hours on Mondays from 1-3pm if they have questions.

STEP 3 – Submit your application to the University of Colorado
You may submit your application online or by mail. All instructions and forms can be found at the CU Admissions site. Information is included for incoming freshmen, transfer students, international students, and others. Complete all of the necessary steps on that site.

STEP 4 – Complete the BFA in Musical Theatre Pre-audition Application
Print, complete and return the audition BFA Audition Application.

STEP 5 – Submit essay to the Theatre & Dance Dept.
In an original essay, tell us why you would like to be a musical theatre major and what your future goals are as a performer. Comment on your musical theatre background and any other things you would like us to know. This essay should be double-spaced and typed. It should be no longer than one page. Send it with your application. (You may substitute a copy of the essay written for the university application if you wish.)

STEP 6 – Submit at least one reference
Using the BFA in Musical Theatre Recommendation Form, submit at least one recommendation from a voice or theatre teacher who knows your musical ability. An optional second reference should be another person who knows you well — a music, dance, and/or theatre teacher is preferred, but another teacher, counselor, or member of the community is acceptable.

STEP 7 – Mail Application
Mail application, essay, reference (in a signed, sealed envelope), and recording* by December 1st to:  Bud Coleman, Dept. of Theatre & Dance, 261 UCB, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309. Current students may submit their application materials at any time during the year.  *Recording consists of you singing two, complete songs to accompaniment. No a capella recordings will be considered.  Please send the MP3 files to bud.coleman@colorado.edu or post them on YouTube, Vimeo, etc.  Do not send a CD or DVD.

STEP 8 - Audition 
If you pass the pre-audition, you will be invited to campus for a live audition. Auditions typically take place in February on the CU-Boulder campus for students planning to start at CU in the fall. For current students, auditions are held throughout the academic school year by advance appointment only.  If travel is prohibitive, recorded auditions may be substituted if you are a non-Colorado resident. 

Please do not make travel arrangements before you’ve received an email confirming your audition date and time.

Musical Theatre applicants will have a two-day audition process spanning Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Friday auditions will cover voice and monologues, while Saturdays are for dance. Musical Theatre applicants 2020 audition dates will be: Jan. 31-Feb. 1, Feb. 7-8 and Feb. 14-15.
