Student Legal Services (SLS) has a staff of two full-time attorneys, one part-time contract attorney and a full-time legal assistant. Our attorneys can help students make sense of their legal situations, explain their options and help them prevent their legal issues from spiraling out of control. We’ll even tell students when we think they don’t need lawyers.

This is an excellent and extremely important service which should be expanded if anything.
I really appreciate this service and it was amazing service received from John Sirkis. He had read and prepared beforehand and already had a plan for me based on the detailed explanation I wrote on the registering questions. It helped me a lot.
The SLS team helped me feel comfortable in their office in a time when I was otherwise very stressed out. They clarified the legal issue I was facing and helped me understand what steps I needed to take. I feel very grateful to have had the opportunity to utilize this service, as it made the whole process much easier and less stressful, and will be certain to recommend SLS to any students I know that could benefit from it.

Student Legal Services is one of the most essential groups on campus. It’s sad that not many people know about this service because for me, it was incredibly helpful. The staff is really nice and professional. They don’t judge you or make you feel bad about a mistake you made. Overall a great service.

This has been one of the best services on CU campus that I have ever accessed. Marcel Bigsby was incredibly on top of it, following up to make sure I accessed the services I need. Denean Hill built great rapport, offered invaluable help, and helped me navigate one of the toughest situations I have been through.
Quick time frame to schedule an appointment and to meet with someone. Was able to communicate with me in a form I could understand and weighed my options.
Denean knew exactly how to handle my case, even though it didn’t take place in Boulder court. She was very informative and incredibly helpful. She did a great job handling my case and helped me achieve the result I had hoped for.

I went to a few other attorneys before coming to him, and they all basically agreed that I was in serious legal trouble and there was no reason to fight the case. He helped me realize the unfairness of the situation. It was a relief having an attorney with such a positive outlook and so much experience dealing with student DUI cases in Boulder County.
His legal knowledge, solely, won my case for me.

My discussion with the lawyer was very helpful. He explained the legal definitions and processes and answered all of my questions. It seemed to me that he is familiar with all of the applicable laws and he seemed well acquainted with the nuances of the human side of the plea bargain process. Talking with him, I understand this subset of the legal system better. This case has been a burden for me mentally. Having talked with Legal Services, I am able to put my questions to rest and I believe I will be able to focus more on my studies, and all other aspects of my life. I was very happy with the service I received from Student Legal Services. From meetings to courtroom proceedings I felt that I was very well represented throughout my legal situation. I was explained everything that I did not understand throughout the ordeal. Being represented by Student Legal Services reduced my concern about the issue while I went to school. I would most definitely recommend Denean Hill to anybody seeking legal advice/representation.
He was absolutely competent and professional. I was made completely aware of the legal ramifications of my actions, court scenarios, and legal issues related to my incident. He went out of his way to explain in detail how things would most likely work out with my case. He was very helpful and clear with all of my questions and working through my paperwork. The legal help I received was extremely competent and professional at all times. I received more information than I expected to gain. My rights/duties were clearly understood by myself and if I ever had a questions the CU legal staff answered it clearly and made sure I understood the answer. During the entire legal proceeding, the legal assistance ensured me that they were handling everything and that I had nothing to worry about. Because of their professional legal assistance I was able to keep my GPA over a 3.0. I was extremely satisfied with the outcome of my legal case. I did not expect the outcome to be as good as it is. The legal services I received was the best I could have received from anywhere in the state. I am so blessed that a friend recommended the Student Legal Services to me. I did not feel ANY issue of insensitivity from the legal services office.
Your help with my legal problem was not only competent and professional, but student friendly and effective. Deanna [Denean] is amazing and helped with every part of the process and was able to maintain great professionalism while keeping the situation calm and as relaxed as possible. I know that I couldn't have had the result that I have without her help. Al at Student Conduct and Deanna [Denean] were able to explain the situation to me (I received a DWAI) and the process-- both areas that I was terrified of because I had never been in trouble before. Every question I had was met with a great answer. The steps were all explained thoroughly and I was able to find some calm during the time before the court hearing, during, and after. This happened during summer and I was not attending class. I am completely satisfied. People have been shocked by the outcome. The office was great and I felt no judgement for being there. I found the help to be very professional and competent. I found comfort in the knowledgeable staff. After meeting with Student Legal Services, I came away with a more fluid understanding of the legal system, and my rights in certain situations. I found comfort in the experience of the attorney, thus allowing me to alleviate my stress and ultimately focus on school. I was relatively satisfied with the outcome of my legal case. Although it was not the best outcome, it was realistic. Everyone in the office was accomodating and welcoming when I came in.
