Hockey at CU
The University of Colorado supports three club ice hockey teams, including two men’s hockey teams. All three teams are members in good standing of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. The two men's teams compete at the Division 2 (D2) and Division 3 (D3) level and the women’s team competes in the women’s division. In the last 3 years, the organization has seen national championships for both the D2 and D3 teams, and a #3 national ranking for the women’s team.

The Division III Team History:
The 2007-2008 season will be the D3 team’s 6th season in the ACHA. Since joining the league in 2002, the team has become the top Division III team in the nation. Helped by the rise in popularity of hockey in the Denver area and the strong performance of CU’s D2 team at national competitions, the D3 team went from struggling to crack the top five in the west division rankings to national champions in just 2 short years.

Eligibility Requirements:
As per the ACHA Div3 policies and procedures manual, players competing in the ACHA must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA, and be enrolled in at least 9 credits for undergraduate students or 6 credits for graduate students in a degree seeking program to be considered academically eligible. Players not meeting these requirements will not be allowed to participate in the CU hockey club.

Tryouts typically begin in the second week of school, with teams being selected by mid to late September. The D2 team and D3 team hold separate tryouts, with the D2 team’s tryouts coming first. Players have the option of trying out for either the D2 team or the D3 team. Players cut from the D2 team have the option of attending the D3 team’s tryouts as well. The fee for tryouts is typically $50 and covers both D2 and D3 tryouts if players choose to attend both. An informational meeting for both teams will be held at the rec center before tryouts begin.

CU is a member of the West Region of division three. The highly competitive region includes such powerhouses as Arizona State (ranked #5 nationally in 2003, and #3 nationally in 2004), Fresno State (#6 nationally in 2005), and the University of Wyoming (National Champions in 2001). Other teams in the west region include the University of Northern Colorado, Colorado College, Dordt College, and South Dakota State.

While totals vary from year to year, the schedule for the season will usually add up to about 25 games. This includes games against local teams such as; The University of Northern Colorado, Colorado College, The University of Wyoming, Metro State (D2), and The University of Denver (D2), and will also include anywhere from two to four road trips. Past road trips have been to Phoenix, AZ, Los Angeles, CA, Albuquerque, NM, Indianapolis, IN, and Austin, TX.

The team practices three times a week; on Monday mornings from 7:00am to 9:00 am, Wednesday evenings from 5:00am to 6:30am and on Friday evenings from 5:15pm to 6:45pm.

The roster is typically made up of a 20 man game squad (12 forwards, 6 defense, and 2 goalies), and a 6 man practice squad (3 forwards, 2 defense, and 1 goalie). Players regularly move back and forth between practice squad and the game squad for reasons ranging from injuries, poor performance on the ice, poor grades, or other various scheduling conflicts. Players on the practice squad do not come on regular season road trips unless specifically asked to, but the team typically tries to bring all players to the national tournament.

Dues for game squad players are typically between $800-$1000, while practice squad dues are usually between $200-$300. Player dues pay for travel expenses including flights, hotels, and rental vans, as well as referee’s fees, league dues, and tournament dues.
