In order to engage our campus and the Boulder community in the fight for health equity and raise money for our partner organization, we are hosting a panel of experts to speak on racial inequalities in healthcare and their impacts on health outcomes. We chose this topic with the intent of furthering our own learning and that of the community because we know that global health equity cannot exist without racial justice.

Meet our Panelists
Dr. Jamila K. Taylor is director of health care reform and senior fellow at The Century Foundation, where she leads TCF’s work to build on the Affordable Care Act and develop the next generation of health reform to achieve high-quality, affordable, and universal coverage in America. A renowned women’s health expert, Taylor also works on issues related to reproductive rights and justice, focusing on the structural barriers to access to health care, racial and gender disparities in health outcomes, and the intersections between health care and economic justice.
A Family Medicine Specialist in Boulder, CO and founder of Take Two Health, which strives to provide personalized, integrative healthcare and empower patients to produce and direct their own health. Dr. Leto is passionate about changing the healthcare system’s top-down approach that limits options and fails to treat the whole patient and leads to severe gaps in healthcare coverage and outcomes for marginalized individuals and communities. Dr. Leto moonlights in prisons and has witnessed racial inequities in health firsthand, especially as they are related to racial inequities in the prison system and the inequities that prisoners face.
Mr. Franklin serves as the Diversity, Health Equity and Inclusion Programs Manager for Children’s Human Resources and within the Child Health Advocacy Institute. For nearly two decades, Robert has worked with youth serving organizations throughout the nations in training, advocacy, program development, change leadership and management activities. Most recently, with Colorado State University, Robert co-chaired the Diversity Catalyst Team. Robert has worked to positively impact the lives of young people, their families and communities through advocacy, ally-ship and educational programming.
Andrea Tilstra is a phD candidate in Sociology at the University of Colorado Boulder and a graduate research assistant at the CU Population Center in the Institute of Behavioral Science. Andrea’s research has focused on Social Determinants of Health and identifying the health consequences of policy changes, institutional practices, and large public health crises and also revealing how these trends further exacerbate existing health inequalities. She has published on these, and other, topics in Demography, Population Research and Policy Review, Biodemography and Social Biology, International Journal of Epidemiology, and Maternal and Child Health Journal.
Dr. Flores is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at CU Boulder. In her research, Flores studies narratives of privilege and disadvantage, particularly as they play out in public discourse around questions of race, gender, nation and labor. She is the author of Deportable and Disposable: Public Rhetoric and the Making of the “Illegal” Immigrant (Penn State University Press, Fall 2020), as well as a number of essays appearing in journals, such as the Quarterly Journal of Speech, Rhetoric & Public Affairs and Critical Studies in Media Communication. Her current work examines mobility and containment as rhetorical mechanisms of race, gender and sexuality.
