Returning for her second season as the Men's Varsity Coach, Jen Gilbert has also taken on the role of Women's Varsity Coach. Jen was born in Melbourne, Australia, and spent 10 years growing up there before attending the United Nations International School in Hanoi, Vietnam from 1996-1999. She started coxing in 2000 at Somerville House in Brisbane, QLD, Australia and won multiple state and national titles including the Varsity 8 race at the BSRA. After finishing High School she joined the University of Queensland Boat Club where she was one of the Elite Squad Coxswains, again winning multiple state titles and competing at elite national events, Continuing her passion for the sport she then worked as an Assistant Coach, producing multiple state and national team members. Her medal collection includes podium finishes with the Queensland Queen’s Cup Crew and Queensland Master’s Crews as part of the Queensland State Team. Her coaching experience includes the Australian Women’s U21 Team, the champion National U21 Women’s Youth 8, Queensland State Master’s Team, varying U19, U21 and U23 National medalists along with School, Collegiate and Master’s programs around Brisbane.
She moved to Boulder in 2016 when her husband, whom was also an elite rower, decided to pursue a post-Doctorate in Theoretical Physics at JILA. She began coaching for Colorado Junior Crew, the Boulder youth crew. Here in the United States, she’s quickly ticking off her bucket list with the 2016, 2017, and 2018 Head of the Charles, the San Diego Crew Classic, and the Schuykill. We’re so lucky to have her here as our Men’s Head Coach at the University of Colorado Crew where she somehow manages to banter with the team on land one minute and push them to be the fastest they’ve ever been on the water the next.
