The figure of the Portuguese immigrant in Brazil from the colonial period to the present day has been vastly studied in the fields of History and Sociology. These studies often show that while the rich colonizer, explorer, and exploiter tended to return to Europe, the poor, uncultured one would stay in Brazil as a member of the lowest social stratus. Although it is known that in Brazilian literature the novels include a number of Portuguese characters, most of them “immigrants” in the South-American territory, a detailed and in-depth study of this topic is yet to be done. The project Portuguese of Paper aims at uncovering and analyzing Portuguese characters (i.e. those who were fictionally born in Portugal) in Brazilian novels from 1822 – the year of the Brazilian Independence – to the present day. Our main goal is build an open digital database with entries that analyze the representation of those characters in Brazilian literature from its origins to the present day.
