Wendy Hawley Carande

Wendy is the deputy director of the Deep Learning Laboratory. With a passion for integrating machine learning into scientific software, she takes an interdisciplinary approach to her work, drawing on her background in astrophysics (PhD 2012), a fellowship with Insight Data Science, and work on a variety of space mission software projects at LASP. Over the years, Wendy has mentored several undergraduate students on machine learning projects, including projects related to solar flare prediction and magnetogram data augmentation. When she isn’t training machine learning models, Wendy enjoys spending time with her daughter (the ultimate built-from-scratch neural network) and hiking.
