Biography

I am from Dallas, Texas and received my B.A. in anthropology and my M.A. in sociology from Texas State University. My primary research focus lies in music and film in society. I analyze a range of perspectives within those topics such as portrayals of mental illness, nationalism, racism, demasculinization, and glocalization. For my undergraduate honors thesis I researched how rap artists in the United States have changed the way they talk about mental illness in their lyrics. My master's thesis focused on South Korean hip-hop and rap community and not just how it has localized a culture to fit their own but also how Western perceptions of non-Black rap artists are still very stereotypical and detrimental. I consider myself largely a cultural sociologist, and I like working in mixed methods although I my projects are largely qualitative grounded theory.
