CoBi stands for Community Builder. It is designed to help students develop their collaboration and teamwork skills. CoBi helps students build trusting relationships in class and provides teachers a way to talk about important social aspects of collaboration. It emphasizes community.
HOW COBI WORKS
CoBi is rooted in the idea of community agreements - behaviors the students identify that they feel will create an atmosphere where everyone's unique perspectives and contributions are valued and celebrated. Students brainstorm and input these lists into CoBi’s four main agreement categories… respect, community, equity and moving thinking forward. As students engage in collaborative learning, CoBi uses speech recognition and language understanding to recognize moments when students express these community agreements. CoBi creates engaging visualization to celebrate these examples with the class. With the help of the teacher, students can set goals on how they want to collaborate with each other…

Artificial Intelligence tools like CoBi can augment teachers’ support for small student groups and help students develop critical 21st century collaboration and social skills.
Non-Evaluative & Protecting Privacy
CoBi is not-evaluative - it only focuses on positive examples.
It automatically anonymizes and aggregates data across the entire class so that individual student privacy is protected.
Users can request that CoBi delete their video data after the class session.
Based on a Youth-Inspired Design
The original idea for CoBi — an AI that could support classroom collaborations in meaningful ways — emerged during a series of learning workshops with youth. These workshops consist of a diverse group of high school students and result in feedback surrounding what our AI partners should, and should not, do. During the second annual workshop, we took the participating youth to a housing coop where one of our team members had previously lived, one where the membership turned over on a regular basis, but where a common community feeling existed. The youth met a person who had the role of “community builder,” and they got really interested in the idea of shifting the narrative from policing behavior to self-adherence to mutually agreed community agreements. The youth wondered if the AI Partner could help them to generate and maintain such agreements and developed a design sketch to embody their ideas.
