Access to the Research Computing environment is provided via a redundant set of login nodes, login{01..04}.rc.colorado.edu. In order to support updates and new features, a new set of these nodes have been provisioned, and we will be migrating to these new nodes in the coming weeks.

The new nodes will

  • Switch from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 to 7
  • Disable access to the legacy compute environment software stack (modules)
  • Enable XSEDE access, including for use by regional partners from the Rocky Mountain Advanced Computing Consortium (RMACC)

Note that the “modules” and “ml” command will still be present on login nodes, but that they will not provide access to a compute environment software stack. To see the software available on a given compute resource, use an interactive job (e.g., sinteractive).

Migration to these new login nodes will occur in three phases. Any questions or concerns about this plan should be directed to rc-help@colorado.edu.

Phase one: availability of new login nodes

Effective immediately, new login nodes are available using the name login-new.rc.colorado.edu. The standard login.rc.colorado.edu name continues to target the legacy login nodes, but upon logging in a message is displayed advising of the upcoming migration.

During this period, all RC users should begin using the new RC login nodes and reporting any missing functionality to rc-help@colorado.edu.

Phase two: new login nodes by default

On 9 May 2018 the standard login.rc.colorado.edu name will be updated to target the new login nodes. Access to the legacy login nodes will still be available under the name login-legacy.rc.colorado.edu.

Phase three: decommission legacy login nodes

On 16 May 2018 the legacy login nodes will be shut down and decommissioned.
