CU Boulder Transportation Services is working with RTD in an effort to improve bus service between the Main and East campuses, with changes coming to two routes beginning Aug. 27. These changes are intended to tailor routes specifically and individually to the Discovery Drive and Marine Street areas of East Campus.

RTD’s Stampede route is being shortened to provide improved and dedicated service to the Discovery Drive portion of East Campus and eliminate the need for the CU-run Discovery Express, which will cease service on Friday, Aug. 24. Resources from the Discovery Express will be reallocated to create a new Marine Street Express bus that provides direct service between Marine Street and Main Campus.

Stampede changes

Beginning, Monday, Aug. 27, RTD’s Monday-through-Friday Stampede bus route will no longer serve the Marine Street area of East Campus, and will instead run on a constant loop between the Sustainability, Energy and Environment Community (SEEC) and the University Memorial Center (UMC).

  • Service frequency will be every 10 minutes from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and every 15 minutes from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Frequency around the major class start times of 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. will increase to every 5 minutes.
  • The Stampede will have layovers only at each end of the route.

The new Marine Street Express

Beginning Monday, Aug. 27, this new Monday-through-Friday route will connect the Marine Street area directly to Main Campus without stopping along Colorado Avenue or Discovery Drive.

Buff Bus

The familiar CU-branded Buff Buses will provide the ride for the new Marine Street Express route slated to begin service Monday, Aug. 27.

  • The Marine Street Express will run every 30 minutes, leaving Marine Street in front of the Transportation Services Center at 15 and 45 minutes past each hour. Buses will leave the Main Campus UMC stop at roughly the top and bottom of each hour for the return to Marine Street.
  • The Marine Street Express will utilize the same two stops along Marine Street as the Stampede does now.
  • Westbound service, leaving from Marine Street, will include stops at the Engineering Center, C4C and the UMC.
  • Eastbound service, leaving from the UMC/Euclid stop, will include stops at C4C, Parking Lot 436 and Marine Street.
  • Service will begin with the first bus leaving Marine Street at 6:45 a.m. The last bus each day will leave Marine Street at 6:45 p.m. and complete the half-hour loop to Main Campus and back.

A better ride

The intent of the changes is to provide more efficient travel to and from Main Campus for those who work at and visit the two major areas of East Campus. The route of the new Marine Street Express has been tailored to rider needs based on a spring survey of faculty and staff who work in the Marine Street area. That survey indicated that the top three Main Campus destinations for people working in the Marine Street area overwhelmingly are the UMC, the Center for Community (C4C) and the Regent Administrative Center.

When it begins service, the Marine Street Express will provide the only eastbound bus service along Regent Drive through campus. The new route will also get from Marine Street to the UMC in about 15 minutes, reducing ride times for employees in the Marine Street area. The improved Stampede service, meanwhile, will maintain high bus frequency for those travelling between Discovery Drive and Main Campus and will get riders deeper into Main Campus than the Discovery Express does now.
