CSPB 3702 - Cognitive Science

Course Details

*Note: This course description is only applicable for the Computer Science Post-Baccalaureate program. Additionally, students must always refer to course syllabus for the most up to date information. 

  • Credits: 3.0 
  • Prerequisites: Minimum program admission requirements.
  • Minimum Passing Grade: C-
  • Textbook: None. Articles, chapters, and webpage readings are distributed week-to-week.

Brief Description of Course Content

This course serves as an introduction to Cognitive Science, the study of the mind, as an interdisciplinary field with roots in Computer Science along with Psychology, Education, and a variety of other fields. Our survey of this area centers on how these ideas of mind both inform and are influenced by computer science ideas.

Specific Outcomes of Instruction

By the end of the course, you should have developed an understanding of the human mind and be able to contribute to discussions, research, and technical work related to the course topics. Hopefully, many of you will be interested in one or more of the areas presented in the course and may use that to shape your projects in future courses or further efforts in your career path.

Brief List of Topics to be Covered

This course is divided into 5 sections:

  1. The Metaphor of Mind as Machine
  2. Problem Solving for Minds and Machines
  3. Vision for Minds and Machines
  4. Game Theory as Simplified Decision Making
  5. Developmental Processes and Evolution for Minds and Machines

Mathematical Concepts Used

Basic algebra, probability & statistics, and matrix multiplication. Many of these concepts are briefly explained in the lessons as a refresher.
