The visible spectrum of hydrogen compared to helium. Helium was unknown until a solar eclipse of 1868, when the bright yellow line was discovered by two different groups of astronomers, and was attributed to an as-yet undiscovered element. Optical spectroscopy continues to be an extremely important tool for astrophysics. The first isolation of helium on Earth came from a uranium ore in the late 19th century.

Exchange "forces" in helium, really the way the state vectors depend upon spatial position and spin, and how they must be anti-symmetric for fermions, result in coupling between the two electron-spins. The result is ortho and para helium states. The same basic physics results in many magnetic properties of atoms and other matter.
