Requirements

(For students admitted in PACS prior to Fall 2017)

  • Bachelors degree in any major at the University of Colorado.
  • 24 hours of course credit completed at CU-Boulder (typically, eight 3-credit courses). Fifteen (15) of these credit hours must come from upper-division
courses (i.e., 5 out of 8 courses; PACS 4500 will count as one of these).  Each of these courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.  These courses must also include:
    • 6 hours of PACS core courses including PACS 2500: Introduction to Peace, Conflict, and Security Studies and PACS 4500: Senior Seminar in Peace, Conflict, and Security Studies. (Completion of PACS 2500 is a prerequisite for enrollment in PACS 4500.)
    • 9 hours of courses in the student's major department that are related to the field of peace, conflict, and security studies (see the approved list of courses or obtain approval from the PACS director).*
    • 9 hours of courses outside the student's major department or in a second major* that are related to the field of peace and conflict studies (see the approved list of courses or obtain approval from the PACS director).

* In the event a major department does not have 9 hours of relevant courses, the PACS director may allow for substitutions with PACS approved courses outside the major department.

Program of Study / Course Approval Form

When you declare a major please complete a Course Approval Form (this form for pre-fall 2017 admit only).

Certificate Completion Form

As you near graduation, please fill out a Certificate Completion Form (this form for pre-fall 2017 admit only).

Other things to note:

  • Professional Internships involving a reasonable connection to peace and conflict studies may be proposed for consideration as satisfying the Certificate's "in-major" course requirements. Internships must be authorized for course credit by a student's major department. Typically, only one-semester internships will be considered, and related course credit will not exceed 3 hours. To see a current list of opportunities, visit our Internships page.
  • Study-Abroad Programs involving a reasonable connection to peace and conflict studies may be proposed for consideration as satisfying the Certificate's "outside-the-major" course requirements. Programs must be authorized by CU for “in-residence” course credit (i.e., not transfer credit). Typically, only programs running up to one semester will be considered, and related course credit will not exceed 3 hours. Here is a pdf of related study abroad programs for PACS students studying abroad.   For more information on CU study abroad programs, including program requirements, dates, housing, costs, and financial aid and scholarships, see the CU study abroad website.
