Daryl Joji Maeda is Dean and Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education at the University of Colorado Boulder. He is devoted to fostering a rich, supportive, and inclusive learning environment in which all undergraduate students can thrive. As a champion for undergraduate students, he leads student success initiatives and is involved in the development of recruitment and student support strategies that will enable CU Boulder to recruit, retain, and graduate a highly diverse and competitive undergraduate student body. He oversees campus-wide academic programs, including the Program in Exploratory Studies, University Exploration and Advising Center, Student Academic Success Center, Special Undergraduate Enrichment Programs, President’s Leadership Class, Top Scholarships, International Student and Scholar Services, the Writing Center, and ROTC programs for the Air Force, Army, and Navy.
Maeda has been a faculty member at CU Boulder since 2005. Prior to his current position, he served as Associate Dean for Student Success in the College of Arts & Sciences and Chair of the Department of Ethnic Studies. He holds a PhD in American Culture from the University of Michigan, MA in Ethnic Studies from San Francisco State University, and BS in Mathematics from Harvey Mudd College.Â
An interdisciplinary cultural historian, Maeda is a nationally recognized scholar in Asian American studies and comparative ethnic studies. He has published two books and numerous articles and book chapters on Asian American activism in the 1960s and 1970s. His most recent book, a cultural history of the iconic martial artist and actor Bruce Lee, will be published in 2022.
Outside of his professional duties, Maeda enjoys eating, cooking, reading, sports, and the great Colorado outdoors. Go Buffs!
