I am investigating science as a form culture, particularly within the relationships between scientists based in Chile and scientists based in California. My interest stems from the remarkable physical similarities of these two landscapes--and the understandings that these landscapes prompt about ecology, agriculture, and other fields. Until now, I have focused upon institutional, twentieth-century connections between the two places. While working with the Center for the Study of Origins, I plan to delve into earlier meanings of science in Chile and California, with particular focus upon the 1830 founding of Chile’s natural history museum.
