Payson Sheets is a Professor in the Anthropology Department. He conducts research projects in Costa Rica and El Salvador, focusing on the stresses on societies caused by explosive volcanic eruptions. The recoveries vary considerably, with the small egalitarian societies of ancient Costa Rica recovering more readily than the more complex civilizations of Mesoamerica.
