RLST/JWST 2600, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam: Abrahamic Religions?
Description: In this course, we explore the beginnings and development of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Each religion has attached its founding to the figure of Abraham. We will ask questions about the origins of their sacred texts, how they are interpreted over time, and how, specifically, Abraham as the founder of each religion is a recurring issue both for religious competition and cooperation. We will cover topics from the ancient origins of the Bible (where Abraham first appears in written records) all the way up to issues of violence, politics, gender, and sexuality in each religion in the modern era.
