sick dogIf your student is feeling sick with a cold, flu or COVID-19, there are campus resources to help. Here are some ways you can support your student when they’re sick.

Staying home

If your student thinks they may have a cold, flu or COVID-19, encourage them to stay home. Most people with COVID-19 experience mild symptoms similar to a cold or the flu. Remind them to stay in the same room and minimize your contact/interactions with others.

Giving notice

If your student thinks they might miss class or work due to illness, encourage them to give their professors or boss a heads up. Students should let them know that they aren’t feeling well and will be staying home as a precaution. Remind your student to ask about making up assignments, projects or exams if they are going to be absent.

Calling ahead

If your student is feeling sick, they can contact a medical professional to talk through their symptoms and treatment options before seeking in-person care. Students can contact the 24/7 NurseLine provided by Medical Services by calling 303-492-5101. This line connects students with a registered nurse to discuss symptoms and treatment options, including when it’s appropriate to take care of yourself at home or seek medical attention. Encourage your student to keep this number saved in their phones in case of future medical needs.

If your student or someone they know has any of these symptoms, have them seek emergency medical care immediately:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • New confusion
  • Inability to wake or stay awake
  • Bluish lips or face

Call 911 or call ahead to their local emergency facility: It is important that students notify the operator that they are seeking care for someone who might have COVID-19. Remind them to call their medical provider if they experience any other symptoms that are severe or concerning.

Making an appointment at the Public Health Clinic

Students who call the 24/7 NurseLine will be automatically transferred to the Public Health Clinic for guidance and to make an appointment if needed. They can also make an appointment by calling Medical Services at 303-492-5432 or by scheduling online. The Public Health Clinic provides in-person appointments and virtual appointments through telehealth. An appointment is required to visit the Public Health Clinic. Students who show up without an appointment will not be able to visit the Public Health Clinic.

During their appointment, a medical provider will review their symptoms, discuss testing options if needed and provide additional resources to help your student feel better.
