Description

Service Restored 11:56 a.m.: The script that resolves Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5) registration issue by subscribing RHEL 5 systems to Satellite 6 (redhat.colorado.edu) is now available. If you don't already have a case open with OIT, please email trouble@colorado.edu and request a copy.

Issue Update 4/29, 12:44 p.m.: The team has identified a solution for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5) registration issue against redhat.colorado.edu, but more testing is needed. We anticipate that service will be restored, Monday, May 2.

Issue Update 4/27, 10:45 a.m.: Since the campus Red Hat satellite server (satellite.colorado.edu) is not receiving updates, OIT will be migrating users to a new satellite server located at redhat.colorado.edu.

Those who need to have a login to the satellite server at redhat.colorado.edu to manage an organization will need to contact us at trouble@colorado.edu. For those who need a one off subscription to redhat.colorado.edu we will be creating an organization and an activation key. Instructions for the use of the activation key will be posted to http://www.colorado.edu/oit/redhat-linux once they have been written.

At the moment, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5) systems are able to register to redhat.colorado.edu, however, they are not able to download any updates. RHEL 5 will be end of life in less than a year (https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2016-0561.html), so this may be a good opportunity to migrate your systems. However, if that is not possible we will be working to resolve this issue with Red Hat, and instructions for a work around will be forthcoming at the aforementioned URL. All version of RHEL above and including RHEL 6 will register and receive updates from redhat.colorado.edu without issue.

The new server at redhat.colorado.edu has been up for approximately one year. However the newest version of the satellite software from Red Hat is, despite being labeled as production ready (by Red Hat), in more of a beta state. Over the last year we have been working with Red Hat support to resolve the issues that have cropped up with varying levels of success.

Unfortunately, because of the large number of issues encountered with the new version of satellite, migrations were not done in the timely fashion we had hoped they would be. This compounded with the failure of satellite.colorado.edu has led to the current situation.

Issue Reported 4/26, 11:13 a.m.: The campus RedHat satellite server (satellite.colorado.edu) has stopped serving updates. As a result, those running RedHat are no longer receiving updates. OIT is investigating this issue and more information will be reported here as it becomes available.
