Student Social Climate Survey, Fall 2013

CU-Boulder will collect data for the cyclically administered Student Social Climate Survey in October 2013. The survey will ask students about:

  • their level of comfort on the Boulder campus and in the community
  • the extent to which they feel they fit in and are welcome at CU-Boulder
  • their perceptions of respect accorded students who belong to various of the many diverse groups of people on campus
  • how often they hear negative remarks or see negative behaviors targeted at others based on group membership
  • their perceptions of how well course instructors and course offerings address issues related to social diversity.

The survey was last conducted in fall 2010. For that administration a large advisory board guided the development of a revised questionnaire. The advisory group for the current survey consists of three members of the earlier group: Alphonse Keasley, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Campus Climate; Jim Davis-Rosenthal, Director of Orientation; and Julie Volckens, Research and Data Analysis Coordinator, Community Health, Wardenburg.

The 2013 questionnaire will include the same questions as the 2010 version. We are discussing with the cross-cultural communication working group, chaired by Kaye Orten, the addition of more items about international students. The additions would address the university's goal of supporting international students' success at CU-Boulder. We anticipate that the survey questionnaire will be finalized in late August.

As was done in 2010 we will invite all enrolled, degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students (including those in Law) to participate in the survey.
