Nan Stout is an experienced executive and attorney, who has designed and implemented ethics and compliance programs for both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.  Nan currently works as Ethics & Compliance Officer for the Geological Society of America, where she is spearheading a new ethics program for a professional scientific society with approximately 22,000 members.  Nan previously served as Vice President, Global Business Conduct & Ethics at Staples, Inc., where she designed, implemented, and led an ethics program and co-founded a corporate social responsibility initiative, known as “Staples Soul.”   Earlier in her career, Nan was Staples’ Vice President, Assistant General Counsel, in charge of employment law matters.

In between her ethics and compliance roles, Nan discovered a passion for teaching as a vehicle to share her professional experiences and insights and to explore with students practical ways to make ethics and values-based decisions relevant to their professional lives.  Nan cut her teeth as a lecturer in business ethics at the University of Colorado’s Leeds School of Business.  She then served as a Clinical Professor in Business Ethics at Colorado State University for several years before joining the Geological Society of America.

Nan has a JD from Boston College Law School and a BA in Spanish from Middlebury College.  She also holds a personal and professional coaching certificate from Newfield Network.
